An epileptic attack consists of three stages. The first stage is actually a prelude to an attack, and it is characterized by abnormal behavior. The dog may show agitation and anxiety. Some dogs start suddenly following their owners around or hiding.

Stage 2 shows signs of loss of consciousness, involuntary beating of the limbs, widened eyes, salivation, vomiting, defecation and urination. This stage lasts 1-2 minutes or sometimes longer. Stage 3 exhibits signs of depression, hunger, poor orientation, confusion and so forth. Epilepsy is a hereditary disease, and such dogs need culled from breeding stock.

Beagles, as well as other dogs, can suffer from Chocolate Toxicosis. Many owners and dog-lovers mistakenly consider chocolate to be the best treat for a dog. Indeed, it is mortally dangerous for dogs. It contains theobromide, which may have a strong toxic effect on the dog's body. This sort of poisoning is very serious because there is no effective antidote to theobromide.

Some health disorders correlate to physical stress. The 'performance stress' often occurs after field trials. This usually happens because of excessive physical strain. Therefore, training requires lots of knowledge and careful attention. Overstrain may result in digestion problems and heart trouble, which can be dangerous to Beagles.

Beagles may suffer from infectious and viral diseases, such as distemper, leftospirosis, parvovirus, coronavirus, parainfluenza and so forth. These diseases cause serious respiratory malfunctions and intestinal disorders. In order to prevent the development of infections, Beagles require regular examination by a qualified veterinarian.

As a natural born hunter the beagle cannot be called obedient, it is easily distracted by scents and moving objects, setting its own rules. So it can be dangerous to leave the beagle with babies. (But they are ideal for children after 5.) These dogs like to grab and chew things. Being overexcited they can cause injury. That's why it's vitally important to socialize them properly.
