Beagles Photos - General Appearance

Beagles are small. Their height does not exceed 16 inches. However, they feature quite brawny and sturdy bodies. At the same time, the body is not overly muscular, and this infuses the expression of freedom into their gait and movements.

Beagles Photos - Body

The chest is roomy and deep, providing free and easy breathing. The ribcage is well sprung, but not barrel-shaped. The neck is sloping and muscular, without wrinkles. The back is not very long or muscled. Front legs are hard-boned and firm. Both front- and hind legs firmly attach to the body. The muscle of the hindquarters gives a substantial driving power.

Beagles Photos - Head

The head rounds slightly at occiput and is elongated, featuring a broad skull. The ears are long, and low-set; if drawn, their tips can reach the tip of the nose. They do not have developed erectile muscles. The front edge turns slightly inwards toward the cheek. The eyes are set widely apart. The eyes are brown or hazel, bearing a pathetic pleading expression. The muzzle is straight and cut squarely. The jaws are even, without hanging flews.

The tail carries high and gaily. It is very movable, and Beagles do well live up to the term 'tail-wagger'. The tail features a white tip, which made the dog conspicuous when hunting. It should not bend over the back.

Beagles Photos - Coat and Color

The coat is of medium length, lying close to the body. It is usually smooth or slightly rough. Beagles come in a variety of colors. Tri-colored patterns are more common and, consequently, more desirable. Color patterns usually include brown (tan, lemon or red), white and black.

Beagles Photos - Temperament

Beagles are very loving, jovial, cheerful and amusing. They are very good with children and other dogs. They also socialize with other animals, if appropriately introduced in early puppyhood. These dogs cannot withstand loneliness, and they get depressed easily if left alone for a long time. Beagles possess great stamina, and therefore they are very active, although they do not require large space for exercise. Use a lead when walking your pet and do not leave him unsupervised, because Beagles cannot resist smells and become utterly oblivious to other things. If they catch a whiff, they may run away.
